E36 M3 — the white Eifelblitz

A green lower third rising toward the nose, and nothing else. The car that won the Nordschleife outright, dressed like a dealership demonstrator.

The study

Reading the geometry

This is the 1996 Nürburgring 24 Hours overall winner: Johannes Scheid, Hans Widmann and Sabine Reck — later Sabine Schmitz — whose drive made her the first woman to win the race outright. The door reads Autohaus Rollmann Adenau. A local dealership entry beat the factory cars.

The livery is one horizontal decision. Green fills the bottom third of the shell and rises very slightly toward the nose, with a darker green hairline along its upper edge to keep the boundary crisp, and a green wedge picking up the front valance. Above that line the car is plain white. There is no second colour and no graphic beyond the sponsor set.

The proportion is the whole study. Green occupies roughly a third of the height, which is the point at which a lower band reads as intentional rather than as an afterthought; the slight nose-up rake is perhaps four degrees, enough to imply movement on a stationary car and small enough that you would not notice it if it were absent.

Scheid's own verdict was that the car “was mainly white and, in my opinion, looked pretty naked”. He is not wrong, and it is still the better-composed of his two winners. The following year's car went blue.
