E36 M3 — the waving flag

A checkered flag caught mid-ripple. Two-thirds of the shell left empty so the last third can do all the talking.

The study

Reading the geometry

This is the only study here built from a distorted grid rather than a band, a chevron or a sweep. The unit is a square; the sweep warps every square it passes through; and the result reads as fabric in wind without a single curve being drawn. It is the most sophisticated piece of graphic thinking on this page, and it is almost never copied correctly.

The restraint is the other half of it. Nose, bonnet, front wings and front doors are left plain white — nothing at all. The graphic does not begin until aft of the B-pillar, then climbs over the rear pillar, crests at the roofline and rolls back down across the rear quarter onto the tail. Two-thirds empty, one-third loud. Reverse that ratio and the whole thing collapses into noise.

The colour order never varies: a grey-white lead-in where the squares are smallest, then light blue, then a deep violet blue, then red at the tail, with white as the alternating partner at every stage. A three-line pinstripe in the same order runs the full length of the rocker, low and unbroken, which is what stops the crest from floating off the top of the shell.

Johnny Cecotto took six wins from eight rounds in this car and the inaugural ADAC GT Cup Division I title on 130 points. The oil company is FINA. Reproduced here as colour and stripe geometry only; its marks are not drawn.
